This week, I took a much needed week off from work. I work as a phone representative in a call center and it can get mentally exhausting and overwhelming. I needed a week off just to recharge and get organized. So, of course the very first thing I did on my first day off was clean my house! I clean here and there when I get quick opportunity to do so. When that happens, I normally do something short like vacuum the floor, clean my bathroom sink, or wipe down the shower. I haven’t had a chance to really clean for a while!
I’m embarrassed to say this, but my kitchen and bathroom were really in need of some work. I always use natural, non-toxic cleaning products, but I didn’t realize how well they actually work until I went to work on my pathetic kitchen and bathroom. They worked so well I had to share! And the products I use are so cheap! You most likely have some of them in your pantry.
Non-Toxic Cleaning Products/Ingredients I Used:
- Distilled White Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- Bon Ami
- Shaklee’s Basic H (I know some people don’t like Shaklee since they don’t disclose their ingredients, but my mom has used Shaklee for 20+ years and I’ve never had a problem with it. After researching Shaklee and doing some digging to find a possible ingredient list, I’m comfortable with using Shaklee. But, you can totally skip the Basic H in any of these cleaning methods. I just use it because it works really well, a little goes a really long way since it’s so concentrated, and it doesn’t make me feel sick like Lysol or other conventional cleaning products.)
Chemical Free Kitchen Counters Cleaning:
For my kitchen counters, I mixed half distilled water and half vinegar in a spray bottle. White vinegar is a great natural disinfectant and it’s amazing at eliminating odors. I sprayed my counters with the mixture and wiped them down. There were a couple spots of dried on smoothie or something (so gross, I know!) so I sprayed the vinegar/water mixture on the spots and let it sit for a minute. It wiped right off! I love this non-toxic cleaning solution. I use it for a lot more than just the kitchen counters (which you’ll see.)
Natural Kitchen/Bathroom Sink Cleaner:
I love cleaning my sinks with Bon Ami. I just sprinkle some Bon Ami in and around the sink and wipe it down with a wet cloth or sponge. Bon Ami is an amazing non-toxic cleaning product that has enough grit to scrub anything dried on, off without damaging the sink! My mom has used Boni Ami to clean ever since I can remember. It’s completely safe and it’s sooo affordable!!
Non-Toxic Shower Cleaner:
I had neglected my shower for a while. I even had some rust stains on the floor of my shower from my shower curtain not drying completely. To remove the rust stains, I sprinkled some baking soda over them and poured vinegar over the baking soda. Pouring vinegar on baking soda causes the baking soda to bubble up and fizz. I let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes and took a brush to scrub it off. I dipped the brush in a bucket of water with about 4 drops of Basic H then scrubbed the rust stains. The stains literally came right off! I then sprinkled some Bon Ami on the shower floor and scrubbed with the brush dipped in water with Basic H. After I rinsed the shower floor down, I sprayed the tile walls with the vinegar/water mixture and wiped them down.
Natural Toilet Cleaner:
To clean my toilet, I sprinkled some baking soda in the toilet and poured in a little bit of vinegar to disinfect. I also added about 4 drops of Basic H in the toilet as well. I scrubbed with a toilet brush and let the the baking soda/vinegar/Basic H water sit in the bowl for about 15 minutes before flushing it. Then, I wiped down the seat and lid with the water/vinegar mixture to disinfect as well.
Chemical Free Cleaner for Mirrors:
To clean my mirrors, I wiped them down with the water/vinegar mixture used for the kitchen counters, shower, and toilet. I’ve never had a problem with it streaking and it gets any toothpaste splatters off the mirror so easily!
