One of my favorite things about fall are the desserts! I love fall spices like cinnamon, all spice, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger! They make everything taste like fall!
Ever since I was a kid, one of my moms fall dessert staples was Apple Crisp. It’s probably one of my favorite desserts ever! She would make it all fall (and still does) and it’s always gone really fast!
When I went gluten free (for my skin), I couldn’t eat my mom’s Apple Crisp anymore. I searched and searched online for a good gluten free Apple Crisp recipe and fell short in finding one. NONE of the recipes I found were to my liking. I like soft apples and a crispy coating and none of the recipes I found were providing that for me. Either the apples were covered in oil so they were slimy, the “crisp” on top wasn’t crispy enough and sometimes soggy, or they just didn’t taste like fall.
Failure to find a good gluten free Apple Crisp online led me to swap the ingredients in my mom’s recipe to make it gluten free (which is what I should’ve done in the first place.) Not only is it gluten free, but I’ve also made it dairy free and refined sugar free too! And it still tastes just like fall!
Ingredients for Gluten Free Apple Crisp:
- 4 cups of sliced apples (approx. 5 apples)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/3 cup of melted coconut oil
- 1/3 cup of gluten free oat flour (you can make by blending gf oats in a blender until they’re a powder)
- 1 cup of gluten free oats
- 1/2 cup of coconut sugar
- 1/2 tsp Himalayan sea salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp all spice
Step 1:
Peel and slice the apples and put them in a greased baking dish or pie plate. I greased mine with coconut oil. Drizzle lemon juice over sliced apples.
Step 2:
Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Once they’re combined, pour melted coconut oil in and combine until all dry ingredients are coated in oil.
Step 3:
Sprinkle crumbly mixture on top of apples until apples are fully covered.
Step 4:
Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes or until apples are slightly soft. Then you’re done!
I make this recipe all fall long. It’s a great dish for Thanksgiving too and no one will be able to tell it’s gluten free and made without refined sugar! Let me know if you give it a try! And please leave a comment below and share your favorite fall dessert (especially if it’s gluten free!)
